I have always been quite poor at colored pencil portraiture art, however I have been practising and with my most recent speed drawing of Captain America, I was really pleased with the outcome. Although the Captain America portrait was a bit of a cheat as it is not a full portrait due to the mask etc. Any way I thought I was on a roll and so wanted to try something a bit more adventurous.
I am a huge fan of the UFC which for those of you who may not know, it is Mixed Martial Arts MMA and within the sport my two favourite fighters are Nick and Nate Diaz. As Nate Diaz has just fought in a huge fight in Madison Square Garden, I really wanted to try and draw both the Diaz Brothers.
For this drawing I used quite a combination of colored pencils, Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Lightfast, Faber Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor, Black Widow Skin Tone Pencils and Caran d’Ache Pablo. I took two different images of the Diaz Brothers and put them in this order in Photoshop as I could find a single photo of them both. For the lettering of their name Diaz, I just found a font I liked and drew it out. The paper that I used was my favourite Strathmore Bristol Plate 500 Series. This draw took a total of 26 hours of the course of two weeks give or take a day or two.
I have to admit I am really pleased with the final outcome and given that this is a subject I have really struggled with, it just goes to show that a little bit of persaverance goes a long way.
